Teacher Page

A note from the contributing teacher, Alena Palevitz:

The full name of our school is Tianjia Bing Experimental Senior Middle School of Liuyang.

We are located in Liuyang, a small city which is a division of Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province.

Participating students were from Class 0706 in Grade 1 (American 10th grade). (See group photo.) In the group photo, I am on the right side in the black shirt.

My name is Alena Palevitz. I am Tianjia Bing's Grade 1 Oral English teacher. I assembled the materials, shot the photos and video, and created the school tour powerpoint.

How to Use the Lab:

1. Review the vocabulary list with your students. A printable Word version of the list is available here. You may print it and make copies for your students.

2. Have students listen to the audio recordings and repeat the words/phrases/sentences.

3. Have students watch the videos. Ask students to 'catch' the words/phrases in the videos that they have just learned. Watch the videos again. Pause whenever a word or phrase on the vocabulary list has come up, and ask students to repeat it. Discuss the videos with your students. What do they reveal about the culture and language of the students featured? What similarities and differences can your students recognize between their lives and those of the students featured? What questions would they like to ask the students in the video?

4. Use the flashcards page for review and to assess your students' degree of comprehension and retention. Each flashcard is a drawing/painting created by the students featured in the module and represents one of the words/phrases on the vocabulary list. Students may mouse over the flashcards to see the words in Chinese and pinyin.

5. (optional) We welcome your class to contribute a Student to Student Language Lab module in their first language! If you are interested, please send an E-mail to lab@oneworldclassrooms.org. We will send you a module and guidelines.
