Try It, You'll Like It

Lesson/Activity Ideas: Research the origins of foods that students commonly find on their plates; research unusual kinds of foods.  Both explorations can take you around the world and connect with many areas of the curriculum.  Once you return, have students consider this: there are plenty of dishes/foods that Americans eat which might be hard to swallow for some Ecuadorians and Kenyans who have developed particular palates - some that might even be deemed "disgusting" by those who have never seen or tasted them.  Have your students make a menu of such items.

Creative Writing Suggestion: Just for fun, have students make up their own termite recipes using the format of the one given as a model. Before writing, discuss the 'language' of recipes (lists and brief instructions written as phrases or commands; articles often left out) and how it differs from other writing. Discuss how the writing style matches the function.
