Safari! Guide for Teachers
This page provides a summary
of how Safari! is organized and a chart linking to all of
the main student pages.
Summary:
Safari! consists of an introductory poem and twenty two animal
poems written from the perspective of the animals. Students can
begin their Safari! by clicking forward to the introductory
poem or the first
mystery animal poem then clicking
forward through the remainder of the site; or they may go to the
site's Mystery Animal Poem Index at any time and choose a particular poem.
When students choose a poem, they will go directly to a Mystery
Animal page which contains two audio links at the top. The audio
link at the top-left allows students to hear the pronunciation of
the poem's title which is the Swahili word for the animal. The
audio link at the top-right allows students to listen to the poem
in the 'voice' of the animal.
This site also contains several Curriculum
Connections pages for teachers
which can be accessed from the home page or the bottom of any student
page. These pages provide activity suggestions, creative writing
ideas, worksheets and curriculum connections related to the poems
and a glossary of the Swahili terms used on the site.
Chart:
Use the following chart to go to any student page on the site. The
list includes all of the animal poems in the order in which they
occur. A pound symbol, #, after an animal's name indicates
a concrete poem. The number of asterisks indicates the reading level:
* = Easy Reading; ** = Moderate; *** = Challenging; **** = Advanced.
